As an experienced charity trustee, Richard had seen successful charities flounder as they failed to raise funds for their ongoing administrative costs and wanted to be able to help. He decided the most effective way was to establish a new trust dedicated to his aims, funded with his own capital. Since 1983 the Bulldog Trust’s objectives have broadened but it has remained innovative and responsive, always looking to ensure its donations make a significant difference.
Bulldog helped to get Medical Relief International (MERLIN) back on its feet in the early 1990s, not just through financial support but with practical administrative help.
In 2006, Richard received the OBE for his outstanding contribution to the charitable sector. And, in April 2008, at the incorporation of the trust, Patrick Burgess MBE, became chairman of our new charitable company, limited by guarantee.
The Trust co-funds the Bulldog Fellowship for String Quartet at Trinity College of Music. This £4000 fellowship offers a promising quartet, financial and musical support during the difficult transition period from music college to professional musician. The 2006 winners, the Badke Quartet, triumphed in 2008 at the renowned Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition winning both 1st prize and the audience prize.
